The world just got its first look at Marvel’s upcoming Star Wars-in-scale science fiction epic.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” has a trailer, and it is awesome.

Accompanied with the cries of geeks everywhere, we finally got to see our favorite band of galactic misfits in full action. Another sound that could be heard amongst the cries—“Who the heck are these guys and why is everyone so excited?”

It’s simple, really. The Guardians of the Galaxy are Marvel’s “cosmic Avengers,” more or less. They’re a band of misfit ex-cons who band together to find a higher purpose for themselves. In doing so, they get tangled up with some baddies who may or may not have had it out for the Avengers two years ago. The film will find these heroes banding together after their leader comes in possession of a highly deadly artifact. In the wrong hands, it could spell doom for the entire galaxy.

There’s the leader, Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star Lord (played by Chris Pratt). He’s a man of earth, but with some celestial ties to his origin. Equipped with his elemental gun and special helmet that helps him breath in space, he’s more adventurer than hero. He runs around space flirting with alien women and getting into shenanigans. There’s Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the green-skinned assassin with some major daddy issues. There’s Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a tattoo-ridden, green hulk of a man, who’s hell-bent on revenge with a good cause. Then we have Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), a super-intelligent, size-changing tree who can only say the words “I am Groot.” Finally, there’s the heart and soul of the team, Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper). He’s the last of his species in the entire galaxy. Rocket is the wise-cracking, expert marksman and best friend of Groot. He’s one of the deadliest animals of his size.

If that doesn’t spark your fancy, here are four more reason this will be the blockbuster hit of the century (or the year for those cynics out there)

1.      James Gunn is making it.

The dude who brought us “Slither” and “Super” is one of the wackiest guys in the business. With this, Marvel told him to go full on “James Gunn.” As is evident in the trailer, this isn’t “Iron Man 3.” This is a high-scale version of a campy cult film with the Marvel tag on it. Gunn is a master at mixing dark humor, practical effects and clever dialogue. His characters are far from normal and he’ll be able to bring out the perfect balance of weirdness and heroics the film needs. Gunn has an outstanding production team behind him to bring his crazy visions to fruition. He also claims to have slept with several raccoons to fully understand Rocket’s character…

2.      The cast is incredible.

Along with those mentioned above, the film also features the likes of Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly and Michael Rooker. With such inspired casting, hopes are high for the quality of the script. Nothing is better than seeing some of the world’s best talents teaming up for the new age of cinema that belongs to Marvel. With the funny guy from “Parks and Rec” in the same film as Oscar-winners, there’s magic bound to happen.

3.      The toys are going to be a BLAST.

NERD ALERT: With a film of this magnitude, money is bound to be made in merchandise and Marvel is aiming high. With several sets of action figures, a line of costumes and three lego sets already up online, it’s evident that this could spell the beginning of something big. In 1977, every little kid wanted a lightsaber. Now, kids will be running around in raccoon masks and every fanboy is bound to have a Star Lord figure in his showcase cabinet. It will be incredible to watch the world of pop culture devour such a powerful franchise through toys and collectibles.

4.      It’s a story unlike any other.

Marvel has a reputation for telling good stories of heroes discovering their powers and saving the day. This isn’t one of those stories. This is the story of some people who have made mistakes in the past, who are broken inside, and have been rejected throughout their lives. This is the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy. This story shows that no matter who you are, no matter what you’ve been through, you can still be a force for good. And that’s awesome.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” hits theaters on August 1st. In the meantime, check out the Guardians of the Galaxy comic run from 2008 by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning to hold you over. And check out the trailer below!
